The role of the Certified Building Official comes with various responsibilities including the development, administration, interpretation, application, and enforcement of codes adopted by their jurisdiction. They are tasked with managing their department’s budget and overseeing the certification and training of inspection staff. Additionally, they must possess an understanding of laws and regulations related to human resources. Furthermore, they should demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of customer service practices, establish and maintain effective relationships with diverse client groups, and possess strong communication skills to interact proficiently with contractors, homeowners, staff, supervisors, the news media, elected officials, and civic organizations.
Moreover, the Certified Building Official is accountable for designing and executing programs aimed at reviewing and inspecting all types of occupancies, focusing on aspects such as fire and life safety, interior finish, occupancy classification, height and area limitations, construction types, and general fire safety measures, following the adopted Codes and Standards within their jurisdiction.
