The Series 7 exam — the General Securities Representative Qualification Examination (GS) — assesses the competency of an entry-level registered representative to perform their job as a general securities representative. The exam measures the degree to which each candidate possesses the knowledge needed to perform the critical functions of a general securities representative, including sales of corporate securities, municipal securities, investment company securities, variable annuities, direct participation programs, options and government securities.

The Series 7 General Securities Representative Exam is considered an “entry-level examination” and serves as a prerequisite for many of the subsequent FINRA exams. Those who succeed in passing the exam become qualified to purchase and/or sell various kinds of securities, including corporate bonds and stocks, investment company products and municipal fund securities. The exam takes six hours to complete (with a break in the middle) and consists of 250 multiple choice questions.

These exams cover a broad range of subjects on the markets and the securities industry and its regulatory structure. This includes knowledge of FINRA rules and also the rules of other self-regulatory organizations (SROs). The purpose of the exams is to ensure that an individual acquires a minimum level of understanding and expertise.
