About VLAN

A VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) is a logical grouping of devices on a network, regardless of their physical location. VLANs allow network administrators to segment and isolate devices on a LAN (Local Area Network) based on specific business needs, such as departmental or security requirements.

By creating VLANs, network administrators can create multiple virtual networks on a single physical infrastructure, which can increase security, reduce network congestion, and improve network performance. For example, a VLAN can be created for the finance department, while another VLAN can be created for the marketing department, this way those VLANs can be configured with different security policies, and access controls, without affecting the other VLANs.

VLANs are configured using VLAN tagging, which is a method of adding a VLAN identifier to the packet header. This allows network devices to identify the VLAN to which a packet belongs and route it accordingly. VLANs are typically used in enterprise networks, but also can be used in smaller networks as well.
