About Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)
Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is a Microsoft technology that provides a method for resolving NetBIOS names to IP addresses on a TCP/IP network. WINS was primarily used in Windows NT-based networks to resolve NetBIOS names of Windows computers to IP addresses. It is a service that runs on a Windows server and allows Windows clients to register their NetBIOS names and IP addresses with the WINS server. The WINS server maintains a database of these name-to-address mappings, which can be queried by other Windows clients on the network to resolve NetBIOS names to IP addresses.
WINS is particularly useful in environments where DHCP is not used, or where DHCP is not able to provide name registration services. This can include networks that have a mix of Windows and non-Windows computers, or networks where DHCP is not supported.
WINS uses a broadcast-based method for name registration and resolution, which can cause scalability issues in large or complex networks. With the increasing adoption of DNS and the decreasing use of NetBIOS, WINS is being phased out in favor of DNS. Microsoft has recommended not to use WINS for new installations and to migrate to DNS instead.
